SandBar is a private bar. To get served, you sign up on the spot for a membership that costs a dollar and lasts ten years, with a valid ID and a phone number. Nobody had mentioned that on the dock, and nobody mentions it in any of the online reviews either. She filled out the form, ordered the burger, and has been a member ever since.
That small surprise says something bigger about how Lake Hickory's waterfront dining actually works. If you've lived here a while, you already know there are a handful of places you can reach by boat. What you might not have pieced together is that each one runs on its own rules, its own calendar, and its own reason for being there. Treating them as one continuous strip of waterfront options is the mistake. They're four separate doors, and each one opens differently.
Lake Hickory covers nearly 4,223 acres with 105 miles of shoreline, according to the City of Hickory's own numbers. That shoreline length is the whole story. A lake with that much coastline doesn't produce a single dock-and-dine row the way a small cove might. It produces pockets, spread across different arms of the water, each one built around whoever bought that particular piece of land and decided to open a kitchen next to their gas dock.
That's why the four places locals actually talk about, SandBar Marina & Grill, Copper Penny Grill on Lake Hickory, Lake Hickory Pub & Marina, and Lake Hickory Adventures, don't feel like competitors circling the same customers. They feel like four different answers to four different questions: where do I get gas and rent a kayak, where do I take the kids on a Wednesday, where do I go for a night out with a band playing, and where do I book something in advance for an occasion.
SandBar sits on Rink Dam Road, close enough to Taylorsville that some directories list it there instead of Hickory, but the dock and the 30 slips put it squarely on the Lake Hickory boating map. The membership requirement isn't a gimmick. It's how the place legally operates as a private bar while still functioning like a public restaurant to anyone willing to sign the form. Once you're in, it runs a normal enough schedule: closed Tuesdays, open for Sunday brunch until 1 p.m., and open into the evening Wednesday through Saturday. Live bands show up through the boating season, and the outdoor patio is the draw, not the indoor room.
The lesson for a first-time visitor isn't complicated. Bring your ID and expect five minutes of paperwork before your food order goes in. Regulars don't think about it anymore. First-timers usually mention it as the one thing that caught them off guard.
Copper Penny, at 101 Catawba Avenue, is the spot with four bars facing the water and 37 beers on tap, plus boat parking so you can tie up without leaving the car at home. Most visitors assume Saturday is the night to go, and seasonally it can be, with live music historically running from 7 to 10 p.m. But the night locals actually plan around is Wednesday. That's when the restaurant runs what amounts to a standing locals' night: a dollar wings, drink specials, kids eat free, and a Prime Rib special that starts at 4 p.m. It's not advertised the way a weekend event is. It's just the rhythm the place has settled into, and the people who eat there regularly know it without needing to check a calendar.
That distinction matters if you're trying to time a trip out on the water. A Saturday visit to Copper Penny is a different experience, louder, more music, more of a destination, than a Wednesday visit, which is closer to a neighborhood cookout with a lake view attached.
Lake Hickory Pub & Marina, at 6706 Limbaugh Lane, changed hands in 2024 when Dan and Meagen Kelly left corporate careers to buy it. Their pitch is less about a big night out and more about making the ordinary lake day easier. You can gas up the boat, rent a pontoon, kayak, or paddleboard if you don't own one, grab a bite at the pub, and pick up sunscreen or snacks at the marina store before heading back out. It reads as the utility stop of the group, the place you use on a random Tuesday afternoon rather than the place you plan a Saturday night around.
New ownership in 2024 also means this is the newest chapter of the four. If you haven't been by in the past couple of years, the operation you remember may not be the one running the docks today.
Lake Hickory Adventures, based nearby at 6707 Limbaugh Lane, doesn't fit the dock-and-dine pattern at all, and that's the point. It's a veteran-owned cruise business, running since 2015, offering public dinner cruises and private charters that carry up to 50 guests. You don't pull your own boat up to a slip here. You book a seat on theirs. Menus rotate by date, steak and seafood one cruise, an Italian spread of lasagna and chicken parmesan on another, holiday-themed meals around Christmas and the Fourth of July. Because no alcohol is served onboard, it runs as a BYOB operation for guests 21 and over.
If SandBar, Copper Penny, and the Pub & Marina are places you go when you already have access to the water, Lake Hickory Adventures is the option for people who don't, or who want the whole evening handled for them, food, music, and the boat itself.

The Pub & Marina exists to keep your boat running and your cooler stocked. Lake Hickory Adventures exists for the people who want an evening on the water without owning the water part.
